From Booked to Fully Booked: 5 Ethical Marketing Takeaways from Our Latest Masterclass by Jayney Goddard, MSc, PG Dip, Ed, FCMA, FRSM. President of the Complementary Medical Association
About This Article
Last Wednesday, more than 100 CMA Members joined Jayney Goddard and CMA Business Development Consultant Angie Litvinoff for one of the most popular Masterclass Tutorials The CMA has ever hosted – From Booked to Fully Booked: Ethical Marketing for Natural Health Practitioners. The turnout told its own story: marketing is the part of practice that gifted practitioners find hardest, and the appetite for an ethical, values-led approach is enormous. In this recap, Jayney shares the key takeaways from the session – and what to do next if you missed it.
Why This Topic Struck Such a Chord
When we opened registrations for From Booked to Fully Booked, the response was extraordinary – more than 100 Practitioners, Fellows and Approved Suppliers signed up, making it one of our best-attended Masterclass Tutorials to date. And honestly, we were not surprised. In all our years supporting practitioners, one theme comes up more than almost any other: “I love the work – I just wish I didn’t have to market myself.”
Nobody enters this profession to sell. You came to it to help people. But here is the simple truth Angie and I built the whole session around: the more of the right people who find you, the more people you can help. Marketing, done ethically, is not an interruption to your calling – it is an extension of it. And the timing has never been better: the global wellness economy has reached a record 6.8 trillion US dollars and is forecast to approach 10 trillion by 2029. The demand for what you do is real, it is growing, and it is looking for you.
Five Takeaways from the Session
1. Ethical Marketing Is an Act of Service, Not Self-Promotion
The biggest mindset shift of the whole session: if you genuinely help people, then letting them know you exist is part of your duty of care. Somewhere near you right now is a person struggling with something you could help – and they cannot benefit from your skill if they have never heard of you. When you reframe marketing as making yourself findable to the people who need you, the discomfort begins to dissolve.
2. Attract the Right Clients, Not Just More Clients
A full diary of the wrong clients is a recipe for burnout. The practitioners with the most sustainable, joyful practices are those who are clear about who they serve best – and who speak directly to those people in everything they put out into the world. Specificity is not limiting; it is magnetic. The clearer you are about who you help and how, the more strongly the right people recognise themselves in your message.
3. Trust Is Your Greatest Ethical Marketing Asset – and You Already Have It
Complementary practice is built on relationships, and relationships are built on trust. Every satisfied client is a potential ambassador; every professional standard you uphold – your CMA registration among them – is a visible signal to prospective clients that you are the real thing. Ethical marketing does not manufacture trust; it makes the trust you have already earned visible to the people who have not met you yet.
4. Consistency Beats Intensity
A frantic month of posting followed by three months of silence achieves very little. A modest, sustainable rhythm – one you can genuinely maintain alongside a busy practice – compounds over time into a steady, reliable flow of enquiries and bookings. The goal is not to do everything; it is to do a small number of things well, repeatedly, in a way that feels entirely like you.
5. Growth Should Feel Aligned, Never Forced
If a marketing tactic makes you cringe, your prospective clients will feel it too – authenticity is impossible to fake and equally impossible to hide. The strategies we explored were chosen precisely because they work with your values rather than against them: no pushy tactics, no gimmicks, and nothing that compromises your integrity or your professional standards. When your marketing feels aligned, you will actually do it – and that, more than any clever technique, is what fills a practice.
If You Missed It – or Want to Go Deeper
As with all our Masterclass Tutorials, this exciting session on getting booked to fully booked: ethical marketing for practice growth session was recorded for our records but is not distributed afterwards – these are live experiences, and the energy, interaction and Q&A that make them so valuable simply cannot be replicated in a replay. also, we truly respect the privacy of our attendees. We find that when we offer a safe space like this to discuss business matters, it helps our attendees if they know that we will not be putting this out into the public domain. Therefore, they can ask questions that pertain directly to their own business activities. If you missed this brilliant CMA MasterClass, this recap is your best route to the key ideas – and when your invitation to the next Masterclass Tutorial lands in your inbox, do register straight away and join us live. As more than 100 of your fellow Members will tell you, it is well worth showing up for.
And if the session lit a spark and you would like personal, one-to-one support with your own practice, Angie offers 1-2-1 CMA Business Development Consultations where you can work through your specific business challenges with her expert guidance. Many of the practitioners who have worked with Angie describe it as the turning point in how they think about their practice as a business.
Finally, for those who want ongoing support rather than a one-off session, watch this space: we will shortly be sharing details of the CMA Practice Growth Circle, a new ongoing coaching programme designed to give you exactly the kind of practical, values-aligned practice-building support that made this Masterclass resonate so strongly. More on that very soon.
A Final Word – and a Thank You
An enormous thank you to every Member who joined us, and to the wonderful Angie Litvinoff, whose business development expertise brings such practical depth to these sessions. The energy, the questions, and the openness in the (virtual) room were a joy – and they confirmed something I have long believed: our community does not need to learn to be pushier. It needs permission and practical tools to share, with confidence, the remarkable work it already does. Consider this your permission slip.
I also want to thank Andrea Carter, our fabulous CMA Membership Secretary, for facilitating the event and whose support throughout is invaluable – Andrea, we couldn’t do this without you Andrea, we couldn’t do this without you!
Reflective Practice – This article is valued at one hour of CMA CPD. please remember to work through the CPD Reflective Practice exercise below and upload a record of your work to your CMA Membership portal
Whether or not you attended the Masterclass, take a few minutes to reflect on the following, and record your answers in your CPD log:
- How do I currently feel when I describe what I do to a stranger – and what does that feeling tell me?
- Who are the clients I serve best, and would a stranger reading my website or leaflet recognise themselves in it?
- Where does trust in my practice already exist – satisfied clients, professional standards, word of mouth – and how visible is it to people who have not met me?
- What is one marketing activity I could sustain every single week without resentment?
- Is there anything in my current marketing that feels misaligned with my values – and what would I replace it with?
One change I will make as a result of this reflection: ______________________________________
