Fragrant Qigong: The Art of Healing by Tracey Lindsay

The origins of Fragrant Qigong are as mysterious as the practice itself. In 1938, in a town called Luoyang in the Henan Province of China, a young boy named Tian Ruisheng was suffering from a life-threatening skin disease. His family was poor and could not afford to take him to the doctor. One evening, a monk travelling on his way to a monastery knocked on their door, asking if they would put him up for the night. When he found out about Tian’s illness, he offered to teach him Fragrant Qigong in exchange for shelter. Tian practiced the exercises every day, and within weeks, his condition was cured.

The monk entrusted Tian with the secret of Fragrant Qigong, asking him not to reveal it to anyone for fifty years. After honouring this promise, Tian introduced Fragrant Qigong to the public in China in 1988. It quickly became a phenomenon, and countless practitioners reported improvements in their health and relief from long-standing illnesses.

Why Fragrant Qigong Matters Today

In our fast-paced modern world, many people face ongoing stress, chronic health issues, and a sense of disconnection from their own bodies. There is a growing desire for simple, effective practices that can support wellbeing without requiring extensive time, special equipment, or prior experience.

Fragrant Qigong offers just that. Rooted in ancient Chinese tradition, it is a gentle energy practice accessible to people of all ages and abilities. While it remains relatively unknown in the West, millions in China have practiced it for generations to improve their health, restore energetic balance, and experience a greater sense of well-being.

Understanding Qigong

Qigong is often described as “energy exercise.” The word Qi refers to the body’s vital life force energy, while Gong translates to exercise. Together, Qigong is the art of developing, balancing, and directing this Qi (energy) to support health and Well-being. There are many styles of Qigong, some of which combine slow, flowing movements with coordinated breathing techniques and focused attention. In contrast, others, like Fragrant Qigong, concentrate on the movements to help energy flow smoothly through the body.

One of the unique things about Fragrant Qigong is the pleasant scent that some people notice while practising. This fragrance can be different for each person; some describe it as floral, others as woody or sweet. It’s thought that the scent comes from changes happening at the cellular level, as the body begins to return to a healthier state. Just as illness can sometimes cause an unpleasant smell, which is nature’s way of warning others to keep their distance, healing and wellness emit a pleasant aroma.

As well as the unique Fragrant aroma, many practitioners report noticing subtle physical sensations when practising. These include tingling, warmth, or coolness in different parts of the body, as well as shifts in emotional state such as calmness or joy. Tian explained these as all signs that the body is returning to health.

Who Can Benefit from Fragrant Qigong?

One of the main strengths of Fragrant Qigong is its ease of use. It’s suitable for anyone, no matter their age, fitness level, or health condition. It involves just 15 simple arm exercises that can be done sitting or standing, and, unlike many other forms of Qigong, it doesn’t require special breathing techniques or intense mental concentration. This makes it very easy to learn.

It works by helping your body’s energy vibrate at a higher level. Scientists have found that when a person’s energy frequency is higher, they tend to experience fewer illnesses and enjoy better overall well-being. In contrast, if a person’s energy frequency is low, they are more prone to sickness and face greater challenges to their well-being.

Stories from Practitioners

Through my seven years of research and teaching in this healing art, I have seen firsthand how Fragrant Qigong can help transform lives. For example, Steve had endured chronic back pain and depression for over twenty years. After committing to daily practice, he experienced a noticeable reduction in pain and a more uplifted, optimistic mood.

Lizzie, who struggled with asthma and eczema from childhood, found she was able to reduce her medication within a few weeks of practicing.

Carol had struggled with insomnia for years and was always relying on sleeping pills. She began practicing Fragrant Qigong and now sleeps peacefully without any medication.

In Belgium, several schools introduced Fragrant Qigong to children with anxiety and behavioural issues. Teachers saw improved focus, calmer classrooms, and fewer sick days, while parents observed better sleep and emotional stability in their children.

Susie had been living with chronic arthritis for many years. Despite taking strong medications to manage her symptoms, she often struggled with pain and limited mobility. After committing to the 90-day Fragrant Qigong practice, Susie noticed a significant improvement. Over the 90 days, her pain levels decreased, and she realized she no longer needed to rely on medication daily.
