World Kidney Day: Our Vital Top Five Tips for CMA Members
CMA Members dedicated to holistic health know that it is essential to recognise and support global health initiatives that align with our commitment to well-being. One such initiative is World Kidney Day, which falls on Thursday, 13 March 2025. This annual event aims to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and reduce the impact of kidney disease worldwide.
Understanding Kidney Disease
Kidney disease encompasses conditions that impair kidney function, leading to the accumulation of waste products and fluids in the body. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is particularly problematic, as it progresses over time and often goes unnoticed until advanced stages. In the UK alone, over seven million people are affected by kidney disease, highlighting the urgency of awareness and early detection.
Recognising Kidney Disease in Clients
As holistic health practitioners, being vigilant about the signs and symptoms of kidney disease is crucial. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes. Key symptoms to watch for include:
- Tiredness: Persistent fatigue not attributed to other causes.
- Swollen Ankles, Feet, or Hands: Fluid retention leading to noticeable swelling.
- Persistently Puffy Eyes or Face: Indicating fluid imbalance.
- Blood in Urine: A clear warning sign that requires immediate attention.
- Persistently Frothy Urine: Suggesting protein leakage.
- Increased Urination: Especially at night.
- Itchy Skin: Resulting from waste accumulation.
- Difficulty Concentrating: Due to toxin buildup affecting mental clarity.
- Nausea or Vomiting: Common in advanced stages.
- Weight Loss or Poor Appetite: Indicative of systemic issues.
- Shortness of Breath: Caused by fluid accumulation in the lungs.
- Discomfort or Pain in the Lower Back, Side, or Abdomen: May indicate kidney issues.
If our clients consistently exhibit any of these symptoms, especially those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease, it’s imperative to advise them to consult their GP for a kidney function test.
Risk Factors for Kidney Disease
Understanding the risk factors enables us to provide proactive guidance:
- Diabetes: Leading cause of CKD due to prolonged high blood sugar levels.
- Hypertension: Elevated blood pressure can damage kidney vessels over time.
- Family History: Genetic predisposition increases risk.
- Age: Individuals over 60 are more susceptible.
- Obesity: Excess weight strains kidney function.
- Smoking: Impairs blood flow to the kidneys.
- Cardiovascular Disease: Heart conditions often correlate with kidney issues.
Complementary and Integrative Approaches to Kidney Health
Our holistic perspective offers valuable strategies to support kidney health:
- Dietary Modifications:
- Hydration: Encourage adequate water intake to assist in waste elimination.
- Balanced Diet: Promote consumption of kidney-friendly foods such as apples, berries, and cauliflower, which are low in potassium and phosphorus.
- Sodium Reduction: Advise limiting salt to prevent fluid retention and hypertension.
- Herbal Support:
- Astragalus: Traditionally used to support kidney function, though caution is advised due to potential interactions.
- Dandelion Root: Known for its diuretic properties, aiding in fluid balance. Kidney.org
- Nettle Leaf: May support urinary tract health, but should be used cautiously in individuals with kidney disease.
- Berberine: Berberine is a compound found naturally in many plants. Some research suggests that it may help promote weight loss, enhance blood sugar regulation, and protect against several chronic conditions, including improvement in kidney function.
Caution: It’s essential for clients to consult with qualified CMA Practitioners before introducing herbal supplements, as some may interact with medications or exacerbate kidney conditions. See also CMA President, Jayney Goddard’s book “Complementary and Alternative Health: What Really Works“, published by Harper Collins.
- Mind-Body Practices:
- Yoga and Meditation: These practices can reduce stress, which positively impacts blood pressure and overall kidney health.
- Tai Chi and Qigong: Gentle movements combined with breathing techniques enhance circulation and relaxation.
- Acupuncture:
- Some studies suggest acupuncture may help manage symptoms associated with CKD, such as fatigue and pain.
- Nutritional Supplements:
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: May reduce inflammation and support kidney function.
- Vitamin D: Essential for bone health and may benefit kidney function; however, supplementation should be monitored. PubMed Central
Note: Always assess the suitability of supplements on an individual basis, considering potential contraindications.
