Health Concerns faced by LGBTQIA+ Individuals: A Comprehensive Overview

As healthcare professionals, it is crucial for us to be aware of the unique health challenges faced by individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. These diverse individuals, encompassing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, intersex, and asexual individuals, experience a range of health disparities that can impact their overall well-being. In this article, we will explore some of the common mental, emotional, and physical health concerns faced by LGBTQIA+ people, backed by published research.

Mental and Emotional Health Concerns

Discrimination and Stigma: LGBTQIA+ individuals frequently face societal prejudice, discrimination, and stigma, which can have a profound impact on their mental health. This can lead to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality.

Minority Stress: The experience of minority stress or marginalisation, resulting from chronic exposure to prejudice, can lead to higher rates of psychological distress, substance abuse, and reduced overall well-being.

Higher Rates of Eating Disorders: LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially gay men and transgender individuals, are at an increased risk of developing eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Physical Health Concerns

Health Disparities: LGBTQIA+ individuals often face disparities in healthcare access and quality, leading to delayed or inadequate medical care. This can result in higher rates of chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Sexual Health: Certain sexual health issues, such as higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV / AIDS, are more prevalent among specific subgroups within the LGBTQIA+ community.
