7 Foundations for Growing a Thriving Natural Health Practice – by Jayney Goddard MSc PG Dip Ed, FCMA FRSM. President, The Complementary Medical Association
Master these essential strategies to elevate your holistic business and stand out in a competitive field.
1. Purpose-Driven Vision
Behind every successful complementary health business lies a powerful sense of purpose. This is more than a mission statement — it’s the ‘why’ that drives your work each day. Whether you’re passionate about helping clients overcome chronic illness, supporting mental wellbeing, or educating future practitioners, your purpose should be crystal clear. Write it down. Share it. Let it shape the services you offer, the partnerships you form, and the long-term goals you set.
A clear purpose also helps you say “no” to distractions. It guides you when opportunities arise and helps you stay aligned with your values. For example, if your passion is empowering women through natural hormonal balance, your offerings, blog content, and collaborations can be tightly focused around this core message, making you instantly recognisable as an expert in that niche.
2. Strong Professional Identity
Clients and students are drawn to professionals they can trust — and that trust begins with a coherent, confident identity. Think beyond your logo. Your brand is your reputation in action: your communication style, visual presentation, credentials, and even how you greet someone at the start of a session. Be consistent across all platforms, from your website to your booking system to your social media presence. Authenticity and clarity make you memorable and magnetic.
Ask yourself: would someone know what I do and who I help by glancing at my homepage or Instagram bio? Do my photos and tone of voice match the warmth and expertise I offer in real life? If not, now is the time to update them. Consistent branding builds familiarity — and familiarity builds trust.
3. Evidence-Informed Practice
Natural health doesn’t mean anti-science. In fact, the best practitioners actively integrate up-to-date evidence into their methods — blending tradition with innovation. Keep a regular reading habit of reputable journals and research, and critically assess new trends before introducing them into your work. When you can confidently explain your approach with supportive evidence, you elevate client trust and set a professional standard for others in your field.
Consider writing blog posts or social media snippets that reference new research. These not only educate your audience but establish your credibility. Clients appreciate transparency. When you can explain the ‘how’ and ‘why’ behind your treatments, they’re more likely to commit to your recommendations and refer others.
4. Clear Client Journey
Mapping out your client or student journey from initial contact through to long-term engagement creates a more professional and rewarding experience for everyone. Are your enquiry responses prompt and welcoming? Do you offer onboarding materials or resources that show clients what to expect? Can clients or students easily book, pay, and follow up with you? Optimising each stage of their journey builds loyalty, reduces friction, and leads to more referrals.
Create simple templates for your welcome emails, intake forms, and follow-ups. Consider offering a short welcome video or free guide to help new clients feel prepared and confident. These small touches make a big difference — and show you’re invested in their wellbeing from the outset.
5. Meaningful Marketing
Too many talented practitioners stay stuck because they see marketing as awkward, salesy, or simply overwhelming. The truth? Marketing is just sharing your passion — in a way that helps people. Choose the channels that suit your style: blog writing, public speaking, podcast interviews, educational reels, or community workshops. Offer value first, and the right clients will naturally seek your services. Use stories, testimonials, and real-world examples to build connection and credibility.
Think about the problems your clients face — and create content that speaks directly to those needs. For example: “Three natural ways to ease anxiety without medication” is a far more compelling blog title than “General wellness tips.” Specific, actionable, and compassionate marketing wins every time.
6. Business Systems That Work for You
Without structure, even the most inspired practice will falter. Invest time in building simple, repeatable systems that support client management, communications, financial tracking, and your calendar. Choose tools that automate the admin without feeling impersonal. When your backend runs smoothly, you free up time and energy for client care, study, and rest — the cornerstones of long-term success.
Systems don’t have to be complex. Even a simple appointment scheduler, a bookkeeping spreadsheet, and a CRM (client relationship manager) can transform your workflow. Take time every quarter to review and refine these tools. What worked? What felt clunky? What’s costing you time? Streamlining isn’t about perfection — it’s about building sustainability.
7. Continuous Professional Growth
Staying professionally and personally nourished is essential. This might mean enrolling in CPD workshops, updating your training materials, attending a CMA tutorial, or simply booking a peer supervision session. Don’t isolate yourself. Community and collaboration are powerful sources of resilience. Surround yourself with others who are committed to high standards and ethical practice — and keep pushing your edge.
Keep a development log and set learning goals for the year ahead. Ask: What’s one new skill or modality I’d like to explore? What gaps in my business knowledge could I fill? Whether it’s better client communication, social media marketing, or trauma-informed practice — growth keeps your work alive and evolving.
Where to Focus First
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start with the two areas you feel least confident in. Maybe it’s refining your marketing or getting your admin under control. Every step you take builds momentum. And remember: a thriving practice is never the result of one big change — it’s the outcome of many small, intentional improvements over time.
