SPINEL (RED) :  The Origin of the name is uncertain but the Greek word "spinos" means "spark" which could refer to the white streaks in this stone.

Colour and description: This gem comes in blue, red, violet, and brown yet it is the red stone that is commonly used in healing. The red is due to chromium deposits.

Where is it found: Burma, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Brazil, US, Germany, Italy, Afghanistan and USSR.

Hardness: 8

(Talc is the softest at number 1 and diamond the hardest at number 10)

Structure: Isometric crystalline structure.
